About
The Student Commons design uses heavy timbers supporting cloth drapes and overhead screens to adjust the ceiling heights in the two spaces to more comfortable levels without completely hiding the historic high ceilings. The emphasis in this design is on a relaxing open space coupled with a sense of purity towards the original structure.

The smaller of the two spaces becomes a quiet kitchen and reading area while the larger space is a TV lounge area. Because of the different qualities accorded to each space, the overhanging treatments attempted to emphasize the environment in each space. The outspoken tapestries create a festive atmosphere in the lounge space while the lower mesh covering in the reading area helps to mute that area and create a more intimate surrounding.
